bullet  General Notes:

Notes from Warren Ladd: Nathaneil Ladd, of Exeter, NH, married Catharine Gilman, dau. of Edward Gilman, of Exeter, NH. She died, and he married 2d, Rachel Rawlins, who died at Stratham, NH, July 22, 1717, without issue. He married 3d, Mrs Mercy Hilton, widow of Dudley Hilton, and dau. of Kingsley Hall, of Exeter, NH. May 1742, he gave a part of his brick house in Exeter to his son Elias, and in 1747 he sold his farm in Stratham, NH on which he later lived, to his son Paul. He was a millwrite and a dealer in land. Lived first in Exeter, then in Stratham, and in Exeter. The brick house he built in Exeter is now (1888) owned by John Perry, MD.

Notes from Ardelle A Ladd Dreeson: 1721 Built the Ladd-Gilman House in Exeter, NH, now the American Independence Museum. The premier land that the Ladd-Gilman House sits upon was deeded to Peter Coffin as early as 1690 from the new Town of Exeter. After 1721, a brick house was erected upon the land by Capt. Nathaniel Ladd

This was taken from: New Hampshire Profiles, June 1971. "The Ladd House", Governor's Lane, in Exeter is a rambling two story frame home that Nathaniel Ladd built in 1721 which is now a historic landmark. In 1902 it was purchased by the Society of the Cincinnati, restored, and is shown to the public on Tues. & Thurs. from 2-4.

The two story square brick house consisted of 2 rooms on either side of a central entry. The house was built on a rise of ground overlooking the Squamscott river. During the Ladd occupancy, Simeon Ladd was keeper of the jail. There is an upstairs room in this section of the house with no fireplace, narrow windows, and an iron ring embedded in the baseboard. Nathaniel moved to Portsmouth in 1747 and sold the house to his cousin, Colonel Daniel Gilman, whose son, Nicholas, was to bring his bride here to live five years later. In 1752 the house was enlarged and altered. During the Revolution, Colonel Nicholas Gilman was the first Treasurer of the new state of New Hampshire. The State Treasury Room is to the left of the front door of the original house. Here is the chest, with its huge key, that held
the state's assets. Here also the Treasurer signed the paper currency to make it legal tender. One son Nicholas, Jr. was a delegete to the Constututional Convention. Another son, John, was also a member of the Continental Congress, succeeded his father as State Treasurer and served a series of one year terms as Governor of NH. It was then that Governor's Lane received its name.
