Phoebe Elizabeth (Lizzie) CRANE
Notes from file: Phoebe Elizabeth Crane was known as "Lizzie". "Her parents were natives of Hobart, and were part of the 'Hoosier Colony' that came to the Box Butte Creek Community, south of Hay Springs in the eighties. Other members of this group were the George M. Banks family, the Gadsbys, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Brown and sons, and Ed Schill [?and the Cowlins and the Loomis families?]. "During the Indian scare of 1890-91 these settlers and their families spent several nights at the top of a high hill just over the county line east of Box Butte Creek. Whether the top of the hill was hollowed out by the settlers, or if it was a natural depression, is not known, but it is large enough to hold several wagons, people, and animals. A few cows would be taken along to have milk for the children. It was called Fort Hill. The men would take turns standing watch for Indians." The 1910 census gives her age as 32, and her birthplace as . Phoebe married James Russell KEELER, son of Charles Henry KEELER and Sarah Elizabeth COWLIN, on 5 Oct 1899. (James Russell KEELER was born on 15 Aug 1869 in Baldwinsville, Onondaga Co, NY and died on 30 Aug 1936 in Alliance, Box Butte Co, NE.) |
