Evidence of tragedy was discovered at the Ladd farm site in the 1950's. Hikers, wandering about the area, found a plain tombstone, hidden in tall grass six feet from a large maple. The stone bore only the name "EDGAR." Research, conducted by Elet Milton, revealed it to be the grave of an infant son of Douglas and Jane Ladd. The stone was placed in the Ladd family plot in the Pine Plains Cemetery, but the child's remains were left undisturbed.
