bullet  General Notes:

Notes from "Genealogy and History of the Hatch Family, 1925": She had 7 children.

Notes from Jeanine Ricketts - The first mention of the Ladd surname, that I can find in Alstead, is July 1787, when Widow Mary Ann (Miriam) Ladd rents a horse from Amos Shepard in order to ride side saddle to Marlowe to attend the Baptist church there. Her Baptist connection, I believe, was of short duration, as the Hatch's were members of the First Congregational Church, and Miriam's second husband, Joshua Crane was very active in it also. But at that time in Alstead, most of the congregation was dissatisfied with the First Congregational minister, who was finally dismissed in 1789. The Baptist Church did not have a building in Alstead until 1802, so that would be why Miriam would be riding to Marlowe to attend the Baptist services in 1787. The man from whom she rented the horse was the same man who married her and Joshua Crane. Miriam Ladd and Joshua Crane filed their marriage intention on the 2 November 1790. They were both from Alstead at that time, and they were married on the 10th of November 1790 by Amos Shepard, J. P. Along with being a Justice of the Peace, Amos Shepard was also the most prominent merchant in town and ran a public house which is still located in Alstead Center, directly across from the spot where the First Congregational Church was located and where the third church building now still stands.

I had trouble figuring out why Miriam, as a widow with small children, would show up in another town, far away from where she had been living with her husband (Lemuel), but actually, she came home to where she had lived previously, to be near her siblings, and probably her parents, as they did not die until 1802 and 1805 and probably were still living in Alstead when she returned as a widow.
