In 1872, Douglas and Jane Cook Ladd packed their belongings in an ox-drawn wagon and traveled from Constantia Center to Oneida Lake's south shore. The couple chose winter for their move, perceiving the ice to be of sufficient thickness. Ice depths exceeding two feet are not uncommon on Oneida. The ice mass often shifts, however, causing formation of dangerous cracks and air pockets. One of Ladd's oxen stepped into a hidden crack and was unable to extract itself. Undaunted, Douglas walked to Frenchman's Island, borrowed a horse from the proprietor of the Frenchman's Island Hotel, and towed the beast from its potential demise. The Ladd's settled near Ladd Point, farmed the land, and raised a family of ten children. Such large families provided a needed labor supply for early un-mechanized farms.
