Notes from Warren Ladd: He was educated in the public schools; was a farmer in Clinton Co, NY, until 1838, when he removed to Benson, VT and continued farming until the Fallof 1846, when he bought the hotel property at Benson Landing, VT of Joel Gibbs. Built a steamboat wharf and a store, entered into mercantile business, and formed a partnership with R W Converse, under the firm name of Ladd & Converse. In 1848 a post-office was established there, and Mr Ladd was appointed postmaster, which office he held until 1867. In Feb 1867, the hotel and nearly all its contents were burned, and son after he sold his Benson Landing property and removed to De Kalb, IL, bought a farm of 160 acres, and went to farming again; remained there until Jam 1870, when he rented his Illinois farm and returned to Benson Landing, VT and rented the store he built and went into mercantile business again, with his son Kendall as partner, under the firm name of P G Ladd & Son, and continued in the business until de died.
