Notes from Warren Ladd: He graduated at Dartmouth College in 1835. After graduation he tought school, and studied law at Mt Holly, NJ and at Lowell. In 1839 he began to practice law at East Cambridge, and took an active part in town and municipal affairs serving as a member of the common council and of the school committee. He was also a representative from Cambridge to the General Court, and was one of its delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1853. In 1854 when the Cambridge Police Court was established, he was appointed its standing justice, and held this position until July, 1882, when the court was abolished. Prior to his appointment to judicial office he engaged in active political work, and was for a time chairman of the Whig county committee. Upon the dissolution of the Whig party he became a strong Republican.
