Notes from Warren Ladd: In 1861 he enlisted in the 1st New Hampshire Battery; was taken prisoner at the battle of Bull Run, Aug 29, 1862; was paroled on the 30th, and reached the Union lines at Point of Rocks, MD, the next Wednesday. From there he was sent to a parole camp at Cumberland, MD, from there to Columbus, OH, and from there returned home, which he reached on the last of October. He remained at home a short time, when he joined his regiment just before the battle of Fredericksburg. Owing to some informality in his papers, he did not take part in the battle, but was in most of the engagement of the Army of the Patomac from that time until his term of service expired, Oct 1864. He was an employee of Hirsh & Bro., of Philadelphia, PA, as a travelling salesman.
