John and Caroline (Olds) Ladd, country people and children of the Green Mountain State. In 1849 they crossed over into New York State, settling in Oswego County, where the father died in 1860 at the age of fifty-eight years. His widow died in Vermont in 1885 at the age of seventy-two years. Of their nine children five are yet living, viz.: Urbane, of Bay City, Michigan; Era and Corrin, of Oswego, New York; Cordelia, wife of Richard Rawson, of New Hampshire, and Leroy O. Ladd. John Ladd owned a large grist mill which he operated in connection with his New York farm. His five sons all served in the Union army during the Rebellion and all returned but Lucius H., who died in Richmond, Virginia.

Notes from John Ladd: When work sarted on the Erie Canal in the summer of 1817, John who was 18 years old, left Vermont and went to New York to work on the project. Assigned to work on the portion being built west of Rome, he became fascinated with that part of the state. When work stopped for the winter, he managed to secure a grant of 100 acres of land on the north shore of Oneida Lake in what is now Oswego County. At the same time he got a grant of an adjoining 100 acres in his father's name. Then he returned to Vermont to make an attempt to pursuade his family to return with him. Failing to convince his father of the wonders of that part of New York, he returned alone and built a cabin on his land. He spent the rest of the winter clearing land and returned to work on the canal when it started in the spring. He spent the summers of 1818 and 1819 working on the canal and the winters clearing land. In the fall of 1819 he hired men, layed off the canal, to help him in the clearing of his land as well as that of his father's. These men all were glad to work for their board and small wages to enable them to stay in the vicinity until spring when work opened up on the canal. The portion of the canal west from Rome opened in May of 1820 and that year John stayed home and devoted his time to farming. He was able to sell any produce he could raise to the canal contractors for a good price. For the next several years he worked hard and used most of the money he made to purchase more land, while it was still cheap. Each winter he made a trip to Vermont to see the girl he had known all his life and also to pursuade his family to move to New York. In the fall of 1826 he started bulding a house to replace the cabin he had been living in. Completing his home in the early spring he went to Vermont and married Caroline Morris who at that time was 20 years old. He was again unsuccessful in tempting his family to move to New York so he and Caroline returned alone. John must have had an obsession to have his family close for he never gave up. In the winter of 1827 he built a house on the grant he had secured for his father and had been taking care of. In the spring of 1828 he and Caroline went to Vermont an offered each of his brothers a deed to land near Hastings. This time he was successful and his family sold their property and returned to New York with him. John became a wealthy man.
