Notes from Burdette Ladd (1897-1993)

Asa Douglas Ladd and Claxton Richard Ladd went to Brimley, Chippewa Co, MI in 1908 with their families to do commercial fishing. Their cousins, George Pomeroy and his sons, Ernest Pomeroy and Arthur Pomeroy, influenced them.

Irving Lemuel Ladd and Jerome Joseph Ladd left Onondaga Co, NY and went to Bay Mills, Chippewa Co, MI in 1910 to join their brothers in commercial fishing.

In 1912, Claxton Richard Ladd buys 100 acres in the ghost town of Bay Mills, the original mill town of Hall & Munson Sash Door Company. The workers left after a fire in 1904. The Cleveland Cliff Company bought the town and salvaged lumber from the buildings and shipped salvage to Cleveland Ohio by boats. Over 150 homes were razed.

A rail trestle connected Bay Mills and Brimley and served the mill and small saw mill after the Hall & Munson fire. Claxton Richard Ladd stayed in Bay Mills to fish.

Lemuel F Ladd worked on the salvage driving a team at the sawmill. Irving Lemuel Ladd and Jerome Joseph Ladd move to Brimley.

Clyde Cook Ladd moves from Onondaga Co, NY to MI in 1915 to join in on the families fishing enterprise. Clyde Cook Ladd marries Marion Insley Kitchen Dec 26, 1916. Garth Cook Ladd is born Mar 27, 1918.

In 1915 Irving Lemuel Ladd moved from Brimley to Emerson, Chippewa Co, MI to fish Lake Huron and Michigan.

The Pomeroy's have a fishing base in Saint Ignace, Mackinac Co, MI. The Ladd's and Pomeroy's use trap nets (first used) instead of gill nets.

Claxton Richard Ladd has permanent family base in Bay Mills. He buys much of the land.

Jerome Joseph Ladd and family settle into Brimley.

Lena L Ladd Knapp, daughter of Claxton Richard Ladd, gets a homestead at Bay Mills. Later owned by Glenna Knapp Maki.

Irving Lemuel Ladd moves from MI to Pascagoula, Jackson Co, MS, again influenced by the Pomeroy's, to make an effort at pecan orchards. The Pomeroy's return to fishing the Pascagoula River after the pecan venture fails. Irving Lemuel Ladd returns to fishing and working at the Durke - Blodgett Ship Building Co. as a ships carpenter during WWI.

Irving Lemuel Ladd and family take a boat from Pascagoula, MS to New Jersey by way of south Florida and the inland waterway. Lemuel F Ladd works in a factory in NJ and loses a finger in an accident. Irving Lemuel Ladd is a tugboat captain in New York Harbor approximately one year. Allan Douglas Ladd stays in Clay, Onondaga Co, NY, with Freeman Samuel and Genetta Crowell, during this time.

Irving Lemuel Ladd along with his family returned to MI and began fishing for a short time. He joins the Michigan State Conservation Dept and moves to Brimley for a short time. The family then moves to Trout Lake, Chippewa Co, MI where he finishes a 26-year career. Irving Lemuel Ladd retires in 1947 and returns to Clay, Onondaga Co, NY.

Allan Douglas Ladd worked at the leather tannery in Sault Ste Marie, Chippewa Co, MI. He meets Edith Emma Eby and returns to NY. They were married in Cicero, Onondaga Co, NY on Dec 19, 1925.

Burdette Richard Ladd and Lemuel F Ladd return to New York in 1925.
