Alfred Dwight LADD

Alfred D. Ladd was principal and superintendant of schools in Ashland County Ohio (the village of Nova). He met Elva Helman who came to teach there. Alfred had been teaching school since he was 16. Before he married Elva he had been attending summer sessions at Wooster College (Wooster,Ohio) to complete his degree. A year later he and Elva married and he finished his degree in 1908. Elva and Alfred moved to Wooster. Alfred and Elva had been given housing (caretaker duties) at the old Conservatory of music. Dwight Helman Ladd was born there.

From approx. 1907 - 1913 Alfred was superintendant of schools in Forest,Hardin County Ohio. From 1913-1923 he became Superintendant of schools in East Palestine,Ohio. In 1923 the Ladds moved to Summit,Akron,Ohio where he became the first principal of the new Garfield High School in 1926. He remained at Garfield until he retired in 1950.

Several years after retirement Alfred was elected to Akron Councilman and served 2 terms. He was a fine educator and a sought after public speaker.

Alfred married Elva HELMAN on 14 Aug 1904 in Polk, Ashland Co, OH. (Elva HELMAN was born in 1879 in OH and died on 15 Jan 1973 in Doylestown, Wayne Co, OH.)
