General Notes:
Notes from Warren Ladd: He settled in Stratham, NH, on a farm deeded to him by his father, March 28, 1747. He had lived in Stratham but a few years before he sold his farm there and removed to Epping, NH, where bought a farm on the road leading from Epping Corner toNottingham Square, where he bult a log house near a spring, where the road run at that time. The place has since been known as the Drake farm and is part of the Nottingham town farm. At or near the commencement of the French and Indian war of 1754, being afraid, as tradition says, of hostile Indians, he bought the farm on Red Oak Hill, in Epping, NH, (not far from his other place, but in a more thickly settled neighborhood) of Edward Dearborn, of Stratham, NH. The deed is dated 1755. He was a well-to-do farmer, whose education was as good as could be obtained at that time in the common town schools. He was a man of sound and discriminating judgment, and was often consulted by his neighbors and townspeople in time of difficulties, trials and trouble. In religion he was a disciple of Whitefield, at the time called "New Lights", and declined to pay to the Congregationalist a minister's tax, which caused some trouble.
