General Notes:
Notes from Rootsweb: Death: 26 Jan 1878 Henry County Iowa 1850 census, Berkeley Co., Virginia [now West Virginia]: Martha (16) and William (24) are living in the household of Samuel Carper (39) and wife Peggy (36). The Browns have a one month old son (1/12) Joseph. Others here are Martha's siblings: Henry (10), Martin (8), Thomas (6), Nathan (4), Lydia, one twelfth, and Susan Carper, (80), the widow of Jacob Carper.
1856 state census, Iowa, Henry Co. Trenton Township. tells how many years residents, and for the Carpers and Browns it is 0 years. Samuel Carper's family is #118, no Lydia but but a Mary E (6), Anna E. (3) and Samuel (1) are added. In family #1 21 is William Brown (29), Martha J. (21), Joseph (5), Hanah (3) and Samuel (1).
1860 census: Henry Co. Trenton twp. Samuel's family, same children as 1856, and William Brown's family are in separate houses, but next to each other. Wm Brown is 40, Martha J. 24 [must be a typo . . . she would be 34], Joseph 11, Hannah 10, Sa muel 5, George 3 and William 5/12.
The earliest record of Samuel Carper comes from the year 1834 when in February, in Berkeley Co. he and Margaret Hite were issued a marriage bond with William Hite as suretor. The Martinsburg Gazette noted on March 6, 1834, that "...by the Rev. Mr . Johnson, Mr. Samuel Carper to Miss Margaret Hite, daughter of Mr. William HIte, all of this county" were married. It is probable that their church was the Protestant Episcopal, Norborne Parish, as a Rev. Wm. P. C. Johnson served this parish of Berkeley Co. from 1832 to 1836
