"Early in the morning of April 8, Sir Richard Saltonstrall and family; Rev. George Phillips; Governor Winthrop; and several others, including the families of Isaac and Shubael Stearns, embarked at Yarmouth, England, in the ship Arabella. They had come from Stoke-Nayland, in the county of Sussex. The entire Winthrop Fleet consisted of four ships. The Arabella was the admiral ship, and arrived on the seventy-sixth day, June 12, 1630. The ship Jewel arrived June 13; Ambrose on June 18, and the Talbot on July 2. This group of puritans included about 1,000 persons." He was born in 1598. Shubael Stearns was the son of William Stearns and Emma Ramsford . Shubael died in 1630.


He and his brothers Daniel and Isaac settled in Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1630. They built the first bridge over the Charles River there.

Their families were the original sources of the name "Stearns" in America.
