bullet  General Notes:

Went to Salisbury, MA in 1639, Lynn, MA in 1646, and Reading MA in1676

Vinton says John Upton is of Scottish origin. While he doesn't document it, he says "tradition, apparently well supported, relates that he came from Scotland." He then notes that the name "savors of an English origin." He proposes that John came from one of the border regions and notes that Cromwell fought a major battle in 1651 at Worcester which is near the town of Upton. He speculates that John Upton may have been among the prisoners that were transported to Boston. It appears that he was Scotch Presbyterian rather than Congregational and so he was not admitted a freeman until Apr 18, 1691 when the Freeman's Oath was modified.
