- Died: 26 Jul 1793, Ridgefield, Fairfield Co, CT about age 72
General Notes:
He purchased a dwelling house on one-half acre in Limestone from Mary Thorpe of Ridgefield in Dec. 1774 and sold the same property to Stephen Bradley 15 Jan. 1776. (Rdgfld.Deeds, Vol.5, p.227). On 4 May 1779, Nathan Beers and Marth, his wife of Ridgefield, sold to William Ressiguire of Ridgefield for 100 pounds, two pieces of land in Ridgefield. One was described by Nathan as "the land whereon my dwelling house standeth and 2 1/2 acres." The other was a 5 acre piece, and none of the adjacent land owners were named Beers. (Ibid.,Vol.6,p.34)
The names and birthdates of his children are recorded in the Ridgefield VR in one group, but all other information on him comes from land and probate records. When he died his father's estate was still unsettled, and his estate included his claim on that of his father. On 6 Aug. 1793 Martha Beers, his widow, declined to be administrator of his estate, and her son Jabez was appointed such that day with Avery Boughton standing his bond. Appointed as distributors of the estate were David Olmstead, Danial Lee and Elijah Lee; they set off the following as the widow Martha's portion of the estate 3 Apr. 1794. One-third part of the house namly the Southwest room and the Chamber over said room also one third of the seller on the East side thereof with a privilege of Baking in the Oven two days Each week. Also the Land adjoining said house being 37 rods. Also one third part of some undivided land under the widow Sturges Improvement during her life said land is bounded North and East by the highway; South by the land of Stephen Smith; West by land of Nehemiah Banks and the part of that belonged to said Beers is 2 parts of 49 acres. (Total value of the above was given as L 9/10/8). Jabez Beers, administrator, filed the following account of the estate of Nathan Beers 5 Apr. 1794: The land to be improved by the Wife of Elnathan Sturges during her live, L 18/10/0; The house and land adjoining, 3/17/0; Movables except what is allow widow, 7/12/0; [total] L 29/19/0. The appraisers later added to this inventory, "one Pew in Ridgefield Church at L 1/0/0." The records of St. Stephen's Protestant Episcopal Church in Ridgefield include a plot of the pews in May 1792; Nathan Beers owned pew number 8. The above probate is filed at the State Library in Hartford and labeled, "Nathan-1793-Ridgefield-#580."
The early records of baptism, marriage and death for the church where Nathan belonged are not in existence, according to Rockwell's 'History of Ridgefield'. The widow of Elnathan Sturges referred to in the records above is assumed to have been Nathan's mother.
