bullet  General Notes:

Before Basil left his family in Ontario he worked for the CPR in Walkerton. He was a member of the Orange Lodge and achieved the level of Black Knight. - Bill Eby (eldest son first marriage). He came to Prince Rupert when the grain elevator was being built, about 1926 and moved in with Lindsay and Nate, displacing the children's sleeping arrangements. He went to work in Prince Rupert and became a member of a men's lodge Odd Fellows - from Winifred Eby Stewart, a niece of Basil's. He apparently left a wife and three children in Ontario and never went back. Muriel Eby, also a niece of Basil's says that Basil's son Bill came out to BC looking for him. Bill says he never went out west to find his father. So who could it have been?

Bun says that Basil did return one time and asked Marion if he could see the children. She told him that Bun was at the ball park. Bun remembers seeing him standing outside of a car and watching him. In the car was a woman and some children. Basil got back in the car and left without a word. That's the last time he was ever seen or heard of again. - Sheila Eby

Bud's son from his first marriage said that Bud was born Basil Edwin Eby. Bud's birth certificate and Army papers has the name Basil Hartford Jim Eby. Somewhere between 1926 when he left his first wife and 1929 when he married Jane King he may have change his name. Legally? (Ed Eby)

Bud's military discharge certificate shows he joined 1st Bn. The Black Watch (R.H.A) of Canada, C.A.S.F. on the 14th of September 1939 and was discharged being physically unfit for military service under existing standards on the 15th of January 1940.

I was contacted on Feb. 9, 1999 by Edward Eby, son of Basil, from second marriage. Was able to put the two families on contact with each other.- Dawn Eby Quast

My brother Bud sent for through the library a microfilm from the Vital Statistics Index 1902 (MS 931 reel 14). We found that dad was registered as Basil Hartford Jim Eby (reg. #009247) Although it is not the birth certificate it is the first proof we've seen. - Ed Eby - Sept 1, 1999
