bullet  General Notes:

Not found in 1871 census in Ontario.

In 1881 census in North Bruce, with wife Lydia and two children, Edward age 2 and Winnifred age. 9 months.

In the 1891 census we find Christian and his second wife, Jane, with children, Edwin (note name difference), Winnie, John, Lindsay (all children of the first wife); and Garfield and Harvey, children of the second wife. In the same 1891 census Christian's parents are both listed as being born in Germany but most records have him as the son of John B. Eby born in Ontario. Little is known about this John B. Eby and his wife, Rose Shiefley so it is interesting to wonder why Christian wouldn't have know that his own father was born in Ontario and that the family had migrated north from Pennsylvania.

Southampton is located at the mouth of the Saugeen River in Bruce County. Originally known as Saugeen in 1851, the town was re-named Southampton in 1890 after the English seaport. The original settlers were Capt. John Spence and Capt. William Kennedy. Both were former employees of the Hudson's Bay Company who had retired in 1847. By 1857, 130 houses were in the village. Fire struck on 4 November 1886 and within four hours everything within two blocks of High Street was burned to the ground.

Buried in Southampton Cemetery with Jeny, Vivian and Florence.

In 1880, listed as a farmer at Chippawa Hill, Bruce Co., along with Jacob E. Eby, Peter Eby, and Cyrus Eby, each on his own land.

I was told by my cousin Brian that the D. in Christian D. Eby stands for Daniel, but I have never seen it anywhere. DEQ
