Notes from Warren Ladd: of Springfield. At the age of 12 years, in May, 1829, he went to East Hartford, CT, where he worked on a farm for four years; was salesman and book-keeper in a country store at North Manchester, CT, six years; and was similarly employed in Chatham, (now Portland), CT two years. From there he went to Cabotville (now Chicopee) and carried on the bakery business, part of the time with his brother, Randolph, for ten years. In March 1852, he removed to Springfield, and for thirty years was salesman and a partner in the flour business, in the firms of Hopkins, King & Co. and Kin, Norton & Ladd. In 1882 he dissolved his connection with the latter firm and became cashier of the "Mass Masonic Mutual Relief Association" having an office in Springfield. While in Chicopee he held the office of selectman two years, and after his removal to Sprinfield he was clerk of the common council of the city for fourteen years consecutively. His education was obtained in the common schools and two terms in the East Hartford, CT Academy.
