General Notes:
Notes from Warren Ladd: Mr Ladd passed most of his life in his native town. His education was limited to that afforded by the common school of his day. After leaving his father's home he worked for a time at ship building, and had considerable experience in house carpentering. He was deputy sheriff and county jailor, and keeper of the county house, a hotel or tavern owned by the county in connection with the jail for several years. He was a member of the General Assembly of Connecticut in 1840, and served as a justice of the peace by appointment of the General Assembly from 1838 to 1840, and from 1842 to 1850. He was a director of the Tolland County Bank, and for nearly thirty years was president of the Tolland County Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
About the year 1830 he bought a small farm of thirty acres in Tolland, and a few years later a sawmill, and farming and sawing and dressing lumber were his principal occupations during most of the years thereafter of his active life. His dwelling was near the centre of the village, and was a plain, square house of two stories, with a large chimney built of stone passing through the centre and out at the ridge of the roof, after the manner of many of the country houses of sixty years ago.
In stature he was about five feet nine inches in height, broad shouldered, erect, compactly built, and of full havit. As a neighbor he was hospitable, kind, and always obliging, pleasant and social in his intercourse, upright in his dealings, and sincere in his friendships. He seemed somewhat stern and cold to those who did not know him well. He was reserved in his manner, and a man of few words; modest almost to bashfulness, and seldom took part in the discussion of matters in the annual town or other public meetings. As a magistrate he was uniformly fair and just, and presided with a quiet dignity in the trial of all causes that came before him.
