bullet  General Notes:

Notes from Warren Ladd: He was born on the Ladd homestead in the north-west part of Tolland, Tolland Co, CT. In the distribution of his father's farm, Mr. Ladd's share was seventy acres. He bought a brother's share of seventy acres, and built himself a home which his son's inherited in 1801. He was a large strong man and weighed more than 200 Lbs. He was a man of energy and skill as a farmer, fetile in resources, and untiring in industry. In addition to his farm, he owned and ran a saw-mill, and in rolling logs and handling lumber laid the foundation of difficulties, resulting in death a comparatively young man. Tradition says he was a noted wrestler, and as a competitor it was difficult to match him; and from his great strength he was known as "Armstrong". When on a town-meeting day two men in their quarrel came to a fight, and friends were vainly endeaviring to separate them, he stepped between them saying, "Let me handle these men"; and taking one by the collar with each hand, he place them at arms length on each side. The men at once sprang to strike him. Taking advantage of their motions, he brought their heads toether like tow fighting rams. Placing them at arm's lengthagain, he said, "Careful, gentlemen, the next time your heads come together your noses will bleed". This ended the fight.

Walking from meeting, one very cold Sunday, a neighbor in his company was overcome with the cold and sat down to sleep. He refused to go any further, and wanted to rest for a while and the proceed to his home. He was freezing to death withhout knowing it. Mr Ladd cut some walnut rods and whipped him into motion, hurrying him home in double quick time. The next day the neighbor called and thanked him for his severity, declaring that he had saved his life.

Note from file: 1775, Revolutionary War, Eliab enlisted in the 3rd Company of Connecticut Volunteers under Capt. Roger Enos.
