Pioneer and Patriot Families of Bradford County, Pennsylvania, 1800 - 1825, Vol. 2. by Clement F. Heverly, Bradford Star Print, Towanda, PA. 1915; Responded to the first Lexington alarm, 1775 and served three months at the opening of the Revolution. In 1829 Mr. and Mrs. Ladd moved to Northumberland county with their son, Ephraim.

Local Names, Origin and History - Laddsburg, name first given to the post-office, established at South Albany, 1850, in honor of the Ladds, pioneers of Albany township, PA.

Dangers, Hardships and Thrilling Incidents: "A Night of Terror - in April 1800, Ephraim Ladd, sons Horatio, Charles and others went from Monroe up the South Branch on a prospecting tour. The first day brought them to the central part of present Albany township where a brush cabin was constructed against the bank of the creek to protect them from the night. A fire was built in from of the cabin and after their evening meal, the party lay down to sleep. Horatio Ladd was a timid man. He had heard of panthers and knew they were an object to be dreaded. He was so afraid with fear and could not sleep. His hair fairly stood on ends as his ear caught the sound of a crackling among the brush - a panther sure. It was evident that the animal was moving in the direction of the camp and would make an attack. Awakening his father as quietly as possible, Horatio soon made known his fears and had the gun and powder-horn. The ferocious beast finally stood before them. Horatio leveled his gun and fired, and as he pulled the trigger he screamed, "a panther!" There was a commotion in camp for a short time. However, no one was carried off by panthers that night but in the morning a dead deer was found a short distance from the encampment."

He marched in Boston in Captain Orcutt's Company, April 1775. In the year 1800 he migrated from Tolland, Connecticut to Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
