bullet  General Notes:

Saco, ME City Directory, 1948 - Ladd, Everett C (Agnes M) milk dealer 28 Mechanic h do.

Notes from Eric Ladd: The dairy was originally owned by my great uncle Billy Patton and Loulabelle Patton. Lou was a step sister to Euphemia. Billy Patton, my great uncle, by marriage sold the dairy to Everett.

Agnes took care of all the financial matters like paying bills, payroll. The dairy, which was a full service (product line) dairy, was actually attached to the Everett Ladd home and I believe still stands attached to the Everett Ladd house on Mechanicsburg. I can remember as a child going there. They had the "best" of dairy. My father, Paul Ladd, would say that they used to throw out skim milk as people did not want it. The Ladd dairy had its own delivery trucks with "Ladd Dairy" on both sides. Like the postal service, my father, Perley, Richard, Maurice (Patty's husband) and many others would deliver dairy products right to each person's door in many cases in those steel storage units. These deliveries were made whether it was storming, bitter cold or extremely hot. Ladd Dairy was also good to families who could not always afford to pay or pay their bills on time. My father, after he was married, (just a few times) would work for Ladd Dairy when we would return to Maine for any extended periods of time. Prior to that he worked with Perley many times as a younger man with the deliveries and then later on his own until he left for college.

I have some of the Ladd Dairy order forms they used. I think my brother has some bottles. That was another interesting point. Bottles only, not plastic. You said you have some of the bottle caps. In the Dairy section they had bottle washing machines for each bottle returned. So not only did they deliver bottles of milk, but also picked up the "used" bottles. Real butter and/or lard, not margarine was sold.
Ladd Dairy had an excellent reputation in many parts of the Saco, Biddeford and I think some surrounding areas. That is why Cole Farm Dairy was so interested when Everett decided to sell.

To the best of my recollection, Everett Jr. and Cindy did not get involved in the business.

Everett, like his brother Perley, was a kind hearted man. Everett and his family members made "Ladd Dairy" something to be very proud of.
