From "The Ladd Family of Piscataquis County, Maine". A manuscript compiled by Martha M Carey, Tiopsham, Maine, printed February 22, 1974 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Edmund was 5 feet, 5 inches tall, had blue eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, and his occupation was farming. He was 36 when he enlisted on September 8, 1862, as a private, Co. F, 6th Maine Regiment. He mustered in at Augusta, Maine on September 17, 1862. He was taken Prisoner of War, wounded, by the Confederates on May 12, 1864 and died in Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia, on an unknown date. Martha Perham Ladd died in 1869 leaving their five children orphans. The two boys, Henry and Edmund "Met" Ladd, were raised by Edmund's brother Thomas. Flora lived for a time in the household of Albion Ladd, another of Edmund's brothers. It is not known who took care of the two older girls, who were ages 16 and 14 at the time their mother died. On July 29, 1870, Thomas Ladd received the arrears of Martha Ladd's pension, $59.21.
